What is Base64?
Base64 is a way to represent binary data using a set of 64 printable characters. It is commonly used to safely carry data in email, URLs, and text-based formats such as JSON or XML. It is an encoding—not encryption—so it should never be used to protect sensitive information.
Hello, world!→Base64SGVsbG8sIHdvcmxkIQ==Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 the same as encryption?
No. Base64 only changes how data is written, and anyone can decode it. Do not use it to protect passwords, API keys, or other confidential information.
What is URL-safe Base64?
URL-safe Base64 replaces + with - and / with _, so the result can sit inside a URL or filename without extra escaping. Turn on the URL-safe option in the converter, and optionally omit the = padding.
Does this tool upload my text or files?
No. Encoding and decoding run in your browser, and selected files are handled on your device and are never uploaded.
Why does decoding produce garbled characters?
Base64 stores raw bytes. Text reads correctly only when the bytes are interpreted with the same character set used to create them. Try switching the decoder between UTF-8 and ISO-8859-1.
